photo by @nickcobbing port lockroy or base ‘a’ is a former british research station on the antarctic peninsula, staffed by a team of adventurous volunteers over the summer and closed during the harsh, dark winter. it operates as a museum and post office and attracts visitors from passing cruise ships who queue to send postcards from this remote outpost. lockroy also stocks a surprising range of books about antarctica -the second picture shows a stock delivery at the beginning of the season. in the past lockroy has served as a whaling harbour and scientific research station, some research continues into the gento penguins on the station’s doorstep.
