yesterday was tough. i went out to granite mountain to try something new. i had the understanding that there would be some snow at the top but before setting out to make my summit attempt, i realized i didn’t have my lightweight running gloves in the trunk of my @subaru_usa #outback and the pair of big winter gloves was silly to bring along so i figured, how bad can it be up there? i set out on my climb and as i emerged from canopy of the evergreens that surrounded me, it started to rain.
as i continued up the mountain the rain thickened into a gentle hail, and eventually turned entirely into snow. as i approached the last mile my hands started to get colder and i pulled out my @patagonia #hoodini to keep my body warm. i pulled the sleeves over my hands as much as i could. no matter my fingers continued to become colder and colder.
when i neared the last half mile where i would need to put my micro spikes on my hands had gone entirely numb. i tried to take my @ultimatedirectionusa #mountainvest 4.0 off to take out the spikes, i lacked all dexterity. i couldn’t even open it enough to get the small bag out of one the most easily accessible pockets on the back of the pack.
at that moment i found myself contemplating what to do. i didn’t want to “be a wuss” but i also didn’t want to risk hurting myself out there all alone. there was no one left on the mountain but me. it was the beginning conditions of what could become a whiteout. so i sighed deeply and made the decision to summit another day. if i had had my gloves the last half mile would have been fun. i admitted to myself that i was ill prepared and turned around to head back down the mountain, hands barely able to grasp my trekking poles.
as i descended the mountainside, feeling slowly tingled it’s way back into my fingers. by time i reached my car i had regained all feeling. i quickly got out of my drenched clothing and into the car. it took 2 hours for my body to fully warm up again. it’s crazy how drastic the difference a few thousand feet of elevation can make. i can’t wait to go back.
as soon as i made it home i ordered a new pair of running gloves.
